New Advocates enrolled to the bar at the High Court
New advocates were encouraged to stand by the professionalism as one of the ways to preserve the legal profession.
The call was made on Thursday April 14, 2022 by the Inspector of Courts, HW Flavia Nassuna Matovu, who was delivering remarks on behalf of the Chief Registrar during the enrolment ceremony of 22 lawyers at the Judiciary Headquarters.
HW Nassuna called on the new officers of court to be the ethical lawyers that society is looking for.
She urged them to do justice to all irrespective of their economic status, ensuring that they assist courts to reach a just decision, consult and seek wise counsel from their seniors. "Let your practice be honest.
When you are honest, business will look for you. Acquaint yourself with the new laws, be conversant with the new trends, for example in the Judiciary we have the Electronic Court Case Management Information System, don't be the prophet of doom, acquaint yourselves with it and learn, keep yourself informed and updated and continue learning," she said.
HW Nassuna further cautioned them against acts of fraud and instead encouraged them to give their clients professional advice. "Please advise your clients professionally, have respect for fellow counsel and ensure you are in line and harmony with the people you work with," she said.
Ms Peace Atocho, who represented the Law Council stressed the need to value the legal profession. "Today you have chosen nobility and leadership, therefore, stay in the place of significance," she said.
Adding that this meant to invest in continuous legal education as a way of adding on to what they have.
The representative of the Law Council noted that the practice was not for personal gains but rather service to those in need of legal services especially those who cannot afford them.
The Executive Director of the Uganda Law Society, Mr Moses Okwalinga Opolot said enrollment marked a very unique chapter in the profession but it is only the beginning and it is an opportunity for the advocates to set the pace.
He urged them to interest themselves in legal aid and encouraged them to build a good moral reputation and guard their names jealously.
